Our Sky and Landscape in a Whole New Light - Frank Reaugh

Sep 20, 2016

Our Sky and Landscape in a Whole New Light

For those of us living in the Panhandle, we sometimes fail to appreciate our vast and rugged plains and our dazzling and sprawling sunsets. Because, truth be told, it’s a beauty that we've come to expect every day. Then we hear about a person or event that reminds us to take that second look and thank our stars that—well, we can still see stars at night! This month, there is an event that vows to make you look at our sky and landscape in a whole new light. On September 29th, the Amarillo Museum of Art (AMoA) and the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum (PPHM) are bringing the film Frank Reaugh: Pastel Poet of the Texas Plains to the AMoA for a special screening.

Reaugh (pronounced “ray”) was more than an artist. He was an educator, photographer, inventor, and naturalist that sketched and painted the West Texas plains during the cattle drives of the nineteenth century and into the early 1900s before progress took over the reigns. His art classes soon gave way to memorable, summer sketching trips spanning more than thirty years into what we call—our backyard. First, by mule, horse and wagon, and later by automobile, he traveled into the Texas Panhandle and beyond painting vistas such as Palo Duro Canyon, Tule Canyon, Quitaque Peaks, Medicine Mound, and Caprock Canyon, all of which are featured in the film in his art and photography.

AMoA is currently hosting an exhibit entitled Light on the Plains: Frank Reaugh Pastels from the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum through November 6th while PPHM in Canyon has a permanent gallery of Mr. Reaugh’s works always on display. The screening on Thursday, September 29th, from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm, is a one-time opportunity to see the film in Amarillo, followed by a roundtable discussion led by Michael Grauer, Associate Director of Curatorial Affairs/Curator of Art and Western Heritage of PPHM and includes AMoA Curator, Alex Gregory, and the film’s producer and director, Marla Fields.

The event is free for WTAMU Faculty/Staff/Students, Amarillo College Faculty/Staff/Students, AMoA members, and PPHM Members and only $10 for non-members. Please R.S.V.P. at this link or call 806.651.2242.
