'Goliath' Takes It's Toll

Jan 6, 2016

 January 6, 2016

'Goliath' is known as one of the deadliest and devastating winter storms to date. The calm before the storm, the week of December 24th is known for cooking, winter weather, family and preparing for the holidays.  In Eastern New Mexico, the Texas Panhandle and the South Plains of Texas, farmers and ranchers had a different agenda -  prepare for the storm!  Days before Goliath hit, farmers and ranchers were putting out hay, moving cattle, checking equipment and stocking up where needed.  Late into the evening on December 27th, the wind picked up which is pretty common in this area, but what was blowing in with that wind was a brutal snow and ice storm slamming Eastern New Mexico and the South Plains.  Wind gusts were reported up to 82 mph at the Clovis Municipal Airport and snow drifts as tall as 10 feet in Roswell, New Mexico.  The Texas Panhandle was definitely not left out of the storm.  Snow fall accumulations were recorded anywhere from 6" to nearly 12.5" in some areas.

Snowfall and blizzard conditions took a toll on the cattle industry.  Both dairy and beef cattle suffered throughout the Texas Panhandle, South Plains and Eastern New Mexico.  There are an estimated 70,000 head of cattle dead (most of these dairy cattle) from the storm. Darren Turley, executive director of the Texas Association of Dairymen, estimated as many as 15,000 mature diary cows were lost along with younger animals as well.  The hardest hit areas stretched from Lubbock to Muleshoe, TX.  Dairies weren't the only segment of the cattle industry impacted by the storm.  Final beef cattle losses are also unknown at this time.  Experts are expecting at least 0.1% of the beef cattle population will be lost.  The beef cattle population in this area is around 2.57 million thus approximately 2,570 beef cattle didn't survive the storm.  There are also thousands of head of beef cattle that were turned out on wheat still not accounted for.  Social media groups have been created to help with the disastrous spreading and searching for wheat pasture cattle.

Due to road conditions, some day to day operations came to a halt.  Numerous milk trucks and feed trucks were unable to arrive at their destinations thus production ceased until roads were cleared.

As we begin to thaw out, the searching continues, the clean up is just beginning and the road to normalcy is on the minds of most.  These men and women are working countless hours looking for, feeding, doctoring and caring for our livelihood!  Please keep these dairymen, ranchers, farmers and cattleman in your prayers at night.  From all of us at Triangle Realty, THANK YOU!
