Hip Hip Hooray. It’s Thanksgiving Day!

Nov 23, 2017

This week we came across a blog called “The Origins of Thanksgiving” that got us thinking about Thanksgiving traditions and where they came from.

According to Manuela Tobias, “as it turns out, historians trace the food coma-inducing tradition to multiple origins -- none of which closely resemble what Americans celebrate today. Some celebrations were in the summer. Others put prayer (and even fasting) ahead of feasting. And most menus lacked the modern staples.”

We decided to poll our office staff and learn about some of their traditions and where they came from.

Jenni’s favorite childhood memory is waiting for her dad to finish carving the turkey so that her and her sister could break the wishbone.

At the Miller house, you will find the kids gathered around the TV watching Home Alone while the adults pop a bottle of champagne as the turkey goes into the oven.

Natalie’s family puts up their Christmas tree the day after Thanksgiving with Christmas music playing in the background. “This has been a tradition in our family for over 20 years.”

Lastly, Jordan throws on her official “Black Friday Shopping Crew” long sleeve shirt and braves the hectic holidayshopping crowds with her mom, aunt, and cousin. “It’s my absolute favorite part of the holiday season.”

Speaking of Black Friday, did you know that the day after Thanksgiving has been the unofficial beginning of the Christmas season since the late 19th century?

According to an article written by Ellie Cambridge and Lauren Windle, “The day was given its name as it is often the day that shops "move into the black", meaning they have enough money to cover their costs while reducing prices. However, among shoppers it is well known as a day of bargains.”

Our office staff has already done their Black Friday research, so we though we would share our tips and tricks with you!

Here you can find 15 essential Black Friday apps you need to navigate the maelstrom.

The Amarillo Globe news has put together a list of local store opening times for Thursday/Friday.

These secret Black Friday tips will save you time and money this holiday season. (Except for #17 Avoid Walmart – Don’t actually avoid Walmart. Instead try to go there a few hours after they open. They will still have plenty of stock and you will avoid majority of the chaos.)

Being a local business, we believe that shopping local is important. Small business Saturday is November 26, 2017. The Panhandle Plains Historical Museum and the Canyon Merchants Association have put together a #ShopSmallCanyon Scavenger Hunt where you can help support your local community while getting your holiday shopping done. You will also have the chance to win some awesome prizes!

If you aren’t a fan of large crowds fighting over the best deals of the year, then cyber Monday may become your new best friend.

Not only is it extremely convenient to shop within the comfort of your own home, www.cybermonday.com compiles all of the Cyber Monday deals on to one website, making this holiday shopping option even more tasteful!

But don’t spend all of your money over the weekend, because giving Tuesday is right around the corner!

“Celebrated on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving (in the U.S.) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday kicks off the charitable season, when many focus on their holiday and end-of-year giving.”

In the midst of holiday craziness, don't forget to relax and appreciate friends and family while thinking about what you are grateful for this holiday season!
