Wet Fall's affect on Agriculture

Oct 20, 2017

We are always praying for rain here in the Texas Panhandle, but can there be such a thing as too much rain? With of all the rain we have received in the early parts of fall, what does this mean for farmers?

Why is too much rain harmful to crops?

Excessive rainfall can leach nutrients such as nitrogen from the soil stunting the growth of crops. Weeds can also become out of hand, but are too wet to spray. Flooded or persistently saturated soil can have a negative impact on root ability to absorb nutrients. Wet conditions can prevent farmers from accessing their fields with necessary equipment. Rain can also delay planting causing problems for crops planted early such as corn. Cotton is also sensitive to excess amounts of rain especially at the end of a season. Because cotton needs warmer weather for bolls to open up before harvest, excess rain at the end of season can cause boll rot.

How are the crops looking in the Texas Panhandle?

As of October 11th, Texas Crop and Weather Report from Texas A&M Agrilife reported,“ Temperatures were near normal for the most part and some moisture was received in most areas of the region at the first and last of the week. Soil moisture was rated mostly adequate. In Hall County the rains helped wheat farmers but hindered cotton producers as more heat units were needed. Cattle and pastures looked good, while terraces and county roads suffered due to record rains. In the Lipscomb County area, mycotoxin levels in corn was a problem. Ochiltree County rain halted pretty much all farming and harvest activities.”
